Xiaomi Redmi 5A Rs 4,999

Xiaomi today released its most affordable smartphone model, the Redmi 5A. This phone is being touted as India’s new “desh ka smartphone”, the Redmi 5A is just as impressive in terms of specifications and this budget offering brings some much-needed firepower back to the Rs. 4,999 price point. To add icing to the cake users can get another Rs. 1,000 as cashback, courtesy a partnership between Xiaomi and Reliance Jio. The Redmi buyers will get the cashback as vouchers that can be used to purchase Jio recharges.

Build Quality:

The very first thing that will strike you about the Redmi 5A is how light it is. This phone feels almost non-existent, weighing only 137g. Don’t let the looks fool you it’s an all plastic built with some flex when twisted at angles. The phone has a 5-inch screen 720p (HD) Screen, and the rounded edges mask its 8.35mm thickness.

The phone comes with three colour options Gold, Dark Grey & Rose Gold.

The Redmi 5A features a 5 inch HD IPS LCD display panel. The company has packed a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC clocked at up to 1.4 GHz along with a capable Adreno 308 GPU. The company has launched two variants of the smartphone with the first one packing 2 GB RAM with 16 GB internal storage and the second one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage.

Storage expansion is available up to  128 GB using an external microSD card via a dedicated microSD card slot. The Redmi 5A is paired with a 13-megapixel rear camera sensor with a f/2.2 aperture lens, an LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front camera sensor. It runs MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat 7.1.2. Although Xiaomi seems to be pushing battery life as a major feature it only packs a 3000mah battery.

This phone comes at an interesting time in the Indian market when there is almost no competitor at under INR 4,999 range. This alone truly gives the smartphone an interesting position and having such special specifications and a decent look at this price range gives reason to people buying phones a step above to look at it and wonder if they really need to buy a smartphone above this price range. Xiaomi has truly hit a home run with the pricing and is evidence that they have kept the consumer’s interest front and center while designing this phone.
